Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have an incredible history dating back to the early 20th century since World War I as they were first developed for military purposes. Drones are classified into five categories ranging from nano (less than 250 grams) to large (greater than 150 kgs). In order to exercise adequate control in present scenario, the DGCA(Directorate General of Civil Aviation) under Ministry of Civil Aviation has signed a Memorandum to establish a mechanism for cooperation with the Quality Council of India (QCI), to develop and operate a Certification scheme for UAS – Unmanned Aircraft System as per the Technical Standards defined by DGCA for UAS, with required standards, respective procedures and specifications for Third Party Conformity Assessment systems under the scheme, as the Scheme Owner. All UAV manufacturers must comply with the guidelines and standards of the UAS Scheme as part of the Make in India initiative promoted by the Government of India.
